The initial brief given by the Trust was two fold: on the one hand to replace the existing ramshackle studios for artists with good working individual spaces, optimising natural daylight. On the other hand it was to create a shared exhibition space which would be open to the public. A third as aspect of the work was the relationship of the studios and gallery to the old warehouse which contains other studios and office spaces, to which they are attached. A final consideration was how the new building should address the street in which it stands and the larger context of the semi industrial quarter of Creekside. The choice of a familiar material associated with industrial settings : corrugated metal cladding - sheet piling used in excavations - fitted well with the context of the neighbourhood but it's careful application suggest something of what lies behind the walls.
